The spots are not bordered by veins but can grow across them. The spots often have pale green to yellow rings surrounding them. Leaf spots begin as small, pale to dark green, irregularly shaped spots. It is favored by cool, moist weather and can kill plants within two weeks if conditions are right. In recent years, it has reemerged as a problem. Late blight continued to be a devastating problem until the 1880s when the first fungicide was discovered. It is famous for being the cause of the 1840s Irish Potato Famine, when a million people starved and a million and a half people emigrated. It was first reported in the 1830s in Europe and in the US. It affects potato, tomato and, occasionally, eggplant and other members of the potato family. Late blight of potato is a serious disease caused by Phytophthora infestans. See current recommendations for chemical control measures. Use adequate nitrogen levels and low phosphorus levels to reduce disease severity. Surround the field with wheat to keep wind-blown spores from entering. Keep this year’s field at least 225 to 450 yards away from last year’s field. Do not use a field for potatoes that was used for potatoes or tomatoes the previous year. Do not dig tubers until they are fully mature in order to prevent damage. Keep plants healthy stressed plants are more predisposed to early blight. In general, late maturing varieties are more resistant than the earlier maturing varieties. Varieties resistant to this disease are available. Early blight spots are less likely to become rotted by secondary organisms than the other tuber rots. As the disease advances, the potato flesh often becomes water soaked and yellow to greenish yellow. When the tuber is sliced open, the flesh under the spots is usually brown, dry, and leathery or corky in texture. The edges of the spots are often raised and purple to dark metallic gray in color. Tubers are affected, as well, with dark, circular to irregular spots. Dark brown to black spots can occur on stems. This is especially true on the lower leaves, where spots usually occur first and can be very abundant. As the spots become very large, they often cause the entire leaf to become yellow and die. A yellowish or greenish-yellow ring is often seen bordering the growing spots. The spots usually have a target appearance, caused by concentric rings of raised and depressed dead tissue. The spots are often bordered by veins that make them angular. Spots begin as small, dark, dry, papery flecks, which grow to become brown-black, circular-to-oval areas. Early blight is favored by warm temperatures and high humidity. This disease, also known as target spot, rarely affects young, vigorously growing plants. The terms “early” and “late” refer to the relative time of their appearance in the field, although both diseases can occur at the same time.Įarly blight of potato is caused by the fungus, Alternaria solani, which can cause disease in potato, tomato, other members of the potato family, and some mustards. Both are found everywhere potatoes are grown. Early blight and late blight, two serious diseases of potato, are widely distributed.

None of the authors of these three texts knew the other two texts, and the three combine to depict a general concept of chivalry which is not precisely in harmony with any of them. The ideas of chivalry are summarized in three medieval works: the anonymous poem Ordene de chevalerie, which tells the story of how Hugh II of Tiberias was captured and released upon his agreement to show Saladin (1138–1193) the ritual of Christian knighthood the Libre del ordre de cavayleria, written by Ramon Llull (1232–1315), from Majorca, whose subject is knighthood and the Livre de Chevalerie of Geoffroi de Charny (1300–1356), which examines the qualities of knighthood, emphasizing prowess. The meaning of the term evolved over time into a broader sense, because in the Middle Ages the meaning of chevalier changed from the original concrete military meaning "status or fee associated with a military follower owning a war horse" or "a group of mounted knights" to the ideal of the Christian warrior ethos propagated in the romance genre, which was becoming popular during the 12th century, and the ideal of courtly love propagated in the contemporary Minnesang and related genres. In English, the term appears from 1292 (note that cavalry is from the Italian form of the same word). Therefore, during the Middle Ages, the plural chevalerie (transformed in English into the word "chivalry") originally denoted the body of heavy cavalry upon formation in the field. The French word chevalier originally meant "a man of aristocratic standing, and probably of noble ancestry, who is capable, if called upon, of equipping himself with a war horse and the arms of heavy cavalryman and who has been through certain rituals that make him what he is". In origin, the term chivalry means "horsemanship", formed in Old French, in the 11th century, from chevalerie (horsemen, knights), itself from the Medieval Latin caballarii, the nominative plural form of the term caballārius. God Speed by English artist Edmund Leighton, 1900: depicting an armoured knight departing for war and leaving his beloved The code of chivalry, as it stood by the Late Middle Ages, was a moral system which combined a warrior ethos, knightly piety, and courtly manners, all combining to establish a notion of honour and nobility. Over time, its meaning in Europe has been refined to emphasize more general social and moral virtues. Originally, the term referred only to horse-mounted men, from the French word for horse, cheval, but later it became associated with knightly ideals. The term "chivalry" derives from the Old French term chevalerie, which can be translated as " horse soldiery". It arose in the Carolingian Empire from the idealisation of the cavalryman-involving military bravery, individual training, and service to others-especially in Francia, among horse soldiers in Charlemagne's cavalry. The code of chivalry that developed in medieval Europe had its roots in earlier centuries. All of these were taken as historically accurate until the beginnings of modern scholarship in the 19th century. The ideals of chivalry were popularized in medieval literature, particularly the literary cycles known as the Matter of France, relating to the legendary companions of Charlemagne and his men-at-arms, the paladins, and the Matter of Britain, informed by Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, written in the 1130s, which popularized the legend of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. It was associated with the medieval Christian institution of knighthood knights' and gentlemen's behaviours were governed by chivalrous social codes. Konrad von Limpurg as a knight being armed by his lady in the Codex Manesse (early 14th century)Ĭhivalry, or the chivalric code, is an informal and varying code of conduct developed in Europe between 11. Each of the two Sickleflow 120 ARGB spinners does 650 - 1800 RPM, pushing 61 CFM of air at top speed, with a noise output of 27 dBA (max). The "Turbo" moniker is from the fact that two 120 mm fans are included in the package, which ventilate the heatsink in a push-pull arrangement. The heatsink at the heart of the Hyper 212 ARGB Turbo is standard CM 212 issue - an aluminium fin-stack tower with four 6 mm-thick copper heat pipes that make direct contact with the CPU at the base. Swimming to Antarctica: Tales of a Long Distance Swimmer by Lynne Cox a interesting memoir of a determined young woman who describes herself a "body by Ben & Jerry's." Snake Hips by Anne Soffee, a memoir of one young woman gets involved with the world of belly-dancing when a love affair goes bad. When a little girl falls down a mine shaft and a rescue is underway, the narrator of the story hears a derogatory and racist comment by someone watching the news which propels him/her into a wondrous story of some of little Ursula Wong's notable and not-so-notable ancestors (interwoven with what's going on at the mine shaft, of course).įor memoirs and biographies: Desert Queen by Janet Wallach is the story of Gertrude Bell "adventurer, adviser to kings, ally of Lawrence of Arabia" While I don't think it packs the punch that The Kite Runner does, it does have a similar master-servant theme, this one from a woman's point of view. Do your group members a favor by introducing this genre to them by a woman from Iran who tells it like it is from an insider's perspective. You can talk about so many things when discussing a culture different than one's own. For anyone who has read novels or even non-fiction about life in Iran, this will be an interesting read. Graphic novels are easy to read because they are mostly visual, but do have something to say. (2) How about graphic novels? Try Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. I'm suggesting it for various reasons: popularity, relative newness, originality, fodder for discussion, Australian fiction (I personally had never read a book by an Australian author before!), nice writing, endearing characters. It has 500 plus pages, but reads very quickly because of the type in the book. I read it because of the rave reviews both here and on BookCrossing. Although marketed towards the young adult population in the U.S., it is certainly an interesting book for adults. (1) I'd like to suggest The Book Thief by Mark Zusak. Two books that are unusual, fresh, and new: I personally use this plugin and also recommend this to Leverage Browser Caching.
